How Does the Static Electricity Formed? 2020-01-06

When we work we move and continuously generate static electricity. When we touch a conductive object while being electrically charged, we will discharge and create an "electric shock". This phenomenon is called ESD (=Electro Static Discharge).


When this static electric charge is discharged onto components, component boards or device connectors, the result is always ESD damage. In many cases, such damage occurs without our noticing it, because humans do not sense discharges weaker than 3000 Volt; a discharge must be at least 5000 Volt to be discernible as a spark. The most sensitive components can be damaged at voltages even lower as 30 V, and many commonly used components are susceptible to voltages of 100-200 V. Problems caused by static electricity often remain hidden, and cannot be detected by the naked eye, but the customer will be assured of this victim because his device will stop functioning properly.


Within the electronics industry, ESD is a major factor in reducing product reliability. Problems concerning products only become apparent over time. Maintaining an unbroken protective ESD protective chain is essential to product quality.
